INFORMATION
FOR AOL USERS
We receive numerous complaints every week from users who believe that the @LA California Lotto Page site is not being updated in a timely manner. They have reported that our data is as much as 3-4 weeks out of date.

In fact, this site has been continuously running and up-to-date since July 1995! The reason you may be seeing old information is due to a problem at America Online--one that may affect you at thousands of other web sites. This is what is happening:

AOL stores copies of web pages to conceal the delays its service causes by routing all requests through a chokepoint in Virginia--and users have no way of knowing whether AOL has chosen to display a web page's current version, or an old one. ("Click here to RELOAD the current document," the browser offers helpfully-- but rather than contacting the site, AOL simply re-displays the old, cached version.)

For this reason alone, we could never recommend America Online to anyone (not to mention unreliable access and speed).

The @LA California Lotto Page provides recently drawn lottery numbers at three URLs:

The first two pages are affected by the AOL caching problem. The search page generates a dynamic web page which we don't think is ever cached by AOL and therefore should work for you.

As a site developer, it is very distressing to know that the largest Internet access provider is unable to properly display our site to the vast majority of their users. We don't know how many thousands of users we have lost because of this problem.

We'd welcome any suggestions you might have to solve or work around this problem. If you have any additional information obtained from American Online, please let us know. We have not been able to contact anybody there who could help us with this.

If you need any additional information about this problem or you would like to know more about other problems with AOL's service, please check out the excellent AOL Sucks web site. Despite the somewhat lowbrow name, it is a treasure trove of well-researched factual information about AOL and helped us figure out what was happening.
