HOW MUCH DO YOU WIN? |
You win money if you match 3, 4, 5 or 6 of your numbers
to the numbers drawn.
- The prize amount for 3 out of 6 is fixed.
- The 6 out of 6 jackpot prize is based on how many weeks have gone by without a winner.
When there is a winner, the next draw's jackpot is $4 million.
- The 6 out of 6 jackpot must be split equally between all winning ticket holders.
A lottery pool that jointly purchases a single ticket is treated as one ticket holder.
- For all other prizes, the amount you win
depends on the number of winners in that category.
Match 6 of 6 Winning Numbers $4 million and up
Match 5 of 6 Winning Numbers varies between about $1,200 and $2,500
Match 4 of 6 Winning Numbers varies between about $60 and $100
Match 3 of 6 Winning Numbers $5

CASH VALUE OR ANNUAL PAYMENTS? |
When you buy your Superlotto, you can choose from one of two payment options:
- Annual Payments
You will be paid in 26 annual installments
that get progressively larger.
The 1st year, you will receive 2.5% of the jackpot amount.
On the 26th year, you will receive 5.1% of the jackpot amount.
- Cash Value
You will be paid a one time lump sum of amount smaller than the jackpot amount.
The amount you get depends on current interest rates,
specifically, the rate of U.S. Treasury Zero Coupon Bonds.
At current rates, this is about one half of the total jackpot
(a $4 million dollar jackpot will result in a lump sum payout of about $2 million).
If interest rates rise, the lump sum payout will go down and vica-versa.
From a financial standpoint, if you choose Cash Value and then invest your winnings
and are able to get about 5% return, you will end up with the same amount of money
as choosing Annual Payments.
If you believe you will be able to earn more per year by investing the money yourself,
then the Cash Value option is better. If you don't plan to invest the money,
then the Annual Payments option can help you to control and regulate your spending
(it also gives you an excuse when distant cousins and friends of in-laws start asking for money).
and you definitely will end up with more money, especially based on current inflation rates.
However, if inflation rates over 5% occur during a large number of the next 26 years,
you will end up with less.
Many choose Cash Value because they don't know if they will live for 26 years
to enjoy all the money
or they want to be able to spend large amounts immediately.
By the way, if a lottery winner receiving annual payments does die,
the winnings are considered to be part of his estate and can be willed to others.
You are not allowed to change your payment option after you win.

MEASURES TAKEN TO ENSURE RANDOMNESS |
The state has taken many steps to try to ensure that the numbers drawn are completely random.
- Two draw machines are used - one is randomly selected each draw
- Four complete sets of solid rubber balls are used - one set is randomly selected each draw
- Monthly, all balls are weighed to an accuracy of .001 grams and measured to ensure ball consistency.
- Regular test draws are performed and analyzed by an independent statistician.
- Actual draw data is also analyzed by the independent statistician to make sure no numbers are coming up more often then they should.
- Six pre-test draws are conducted and if any one number is drawn more than a predetermined number of times, additional testing takes place. If further testing yields problems, the machine and ball set are rejected for the draw.
- All activities are recorded on video and tape so they can be examined by an independent observer.
- All draw equipment is stored in a locked room monitored by motion detectors, door alarms and video survellance. Two keys are required to enter the the room.

WHERE DOES THE MONEY GO? |
People kept sending us e-mail asking us
how much of the proceeds go to pay off winners
and how much goes to schools.
So we figured it would be much easier to supply the information
that we got from official California Lottery documents:
- 50% goes to pay for prizes to winners
- 34% goes to pay for public education
- 6.5% goes to pay commissions to retailers
- 3.5% is for costs associated with running the games
- 6% is for other operating expenses (i.e. overhead)
If you're not happy with this arrangement,
please don't complain to us ... we didn't create the rules.
